Our Menagerie

Bo and Mickey. Bo is a golden retriever we rescued from the Garland animal shelter in 1994.  Mickey is a black lab mix we rescued from the Garland animal shelter in 1989.  Their favorite pastime is lounging around the house and bark at passerbys walking their dogs.  They are great dogs and very tolerant of little children's unthoughtful tugs and pulls. Strangely enough, although both are hunting dogs, both dislike getting into water, even in the heat of Summer here in Dallas.

Zion and Bo, Mickey and Pepper, December 2001 Pepper was adopted from the First Monday Market in Canton August, 1999.  He is a rat terrier that is full of energy and spunk.  He has brought a lot of puppy fun to our lives.  Pepper currently likes to pull stuff from our trash cans and rip them up.  We hope he outgrows this bad habit soon.  Rat terriers in many ways resemble Jack Russel terriers, however the two breeds are very different, with the rat terrier being the better suited pet for families with children.

Kandy is a manx we rescued from Plano animal control in 1994.   She was around 5 at the time.  We were told that her owners gave her up for adoption because they were expecting a baby.  We were not deterred and wondered why would anyone give up such a wonderful cat?  At the time we had a baby under one year old and four years later had a baby boy.  No problems whatsoever with Kandy.  She tolerates our children's rough play patiently.  She is a sweet cat who sometimes likes to attack/pat the loving hand that is petting her.  A manx cat is a cat that is born without a tail.  She walks a bit like a rabbit in a gait typical of manx cats.  She will follow us around like a dog and loves to lie down on her back exposing her belly.  Who can resist not petting that fluffy white round belly? (Kandy died Summer 2001 right before we went on our Europe trip of natural causes)

Popeye is an umbrella cockatoo.  We acquired him when he was purportedly two years old in 1992.  He is all white except for the yellow feathers under his wings.  His white crest, when raised, looks like an inverted umbrella when viewed from the front, thus the name.  His favorite foods include chicken bones and marrow, ravioli, spaghetti, bananas, oatmeal, apples, watermelon, peanuts, peanut butter, sunflower seeds, and green leafy vegetables.  He loves to snuggle and making clicking sounds.  Cockatoos are great birds, but watch out for that loud screech and the messy eating habits!

Popeye loves to snuggle and Bo is sometimes the unwilling victim (snugglies can turn into vicious attacks of nips).  Bo is so good natured and will just let Popeye do what he likes.  Of course, these encounters are always supervised.
